Muff Family Dentistry: A Lasting Tradition
In 1929, Dr. Roy Howard Muff graduated from University of Southern California School of Dentistry. He didn’t know it at the time, but his three sons John, Jim and Bruce Muff would follow in his footsteps and go on to complete their dental educations at USC and continue the family tradition.
Drs. John, Jim, and Bruce moved to Northern California and Nevada and have continued to build a reputation of high quality and honest dental care. John has seen three of his sons become dentists. Drs. Mike and Jim Muff practice together in Chico, CA, and their brother, Dr. Dan Muff is an oral surgeon in Reno, NV.
Bruce’s son, Dr. Eric Muff received his Bachelors of Science in Human Anatomy and Physiology with a minor in Biotechnology at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo. Upon moving to San Francisco with his wife Lindy, Dr. Eric was soon accepted to the Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry. Dr. Eric’s acceptance came 86 years after his grandfather graduated from University of Southern California and subsequently began the family dental tradition.
Dr. Eric Muff graduated with honors from University of the Pacific and is a member of the Tau Kappa Omega honors fraternity. He graduated from UOP’s state of the art dental education facility in San Francisco, the most advanced of its kind.
Dr. Eric is proud to carry on a long family tradition, drawing on more than a century of family dental experience in clinical practice. Dr. Eric, is most excited to continue providing ethical care, focusing on patient comfort and satisfaction, for his patients at Auburn Dental Group.
Drs. Bruce and Eric Muff love the Sierra Nevada Foothills. When they are not in the office they can be found enjoying the outdoors with their family and friends. To read more about this family tradition click here to see an article featured in the Auburn Journal.

Dr. Eric Muff was born and raised in Auburn, California. He attended Bowman Elementary School, E.V. Cain Middle School, and Placer High School. While at Placer High School he played football and wrestled for the Placer Hillmen, served as captain of the wrestling team for two years and competed at the CIF state wrestling championships. At the conclusion of his senior year he was ranked in the top ten in the State of California for his weight bracket. When he was not pursuing his studies and athletic endeavors, he was an active member of Boy Scout Troop 277 in Auburn, where he earned the rank of Eagle Scout.
It was on the many troop outings that he learned to enjoy exploring the American River Canyon and the Sierra Nevada. Beginning at age 16, Dr. Muff spent three summers in Alaska working as an outdoor guide at a wilderness lodge on the remote Holitna River. While working there he discovered the pleasure that comes from helping his clients. The rewards for the clients were big fish (and lots of them!).
After Placer High School Dr. Muff went on to graduate from California Polytechnic State University San Luis Obispo with a Bachelor of Science degree in Human Anatomy and Physiology and a minor in Biotechnology. In San Luis Obispo, he became the first student member of Partnership for the Children, a nonprofit organization that funds a Pediatric dental clinic for underserved children in San Luis Obispo County. Upon graduation from Cal Poly SLO, Dr. Muff worked for a year as a Research Associate at Santa Cruz Biotech, Inc., developing antibodies for medical research. Dr. Muff received his training at the University of the Pacific Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry.
While attending Dugoni he demonstrated his commitment to the community with his involvement in service projects in the San Francisco area. Upon his graduation, Dr. Muff was inducted into Tau Kappa Omega honor fraternity, in recognition of his outstanding performance at the Dugoni School of Dentistry.
Dr. Muff is excited to live in Auburn again! In his free time, Dr. Muff loves to be in the outdoors fishing, hiking and exploring new areas in the foothills and the surrounding Sierra Nevada. Dr. Muff and his wife Lindy are enjoying getting involved in the community, and he is excited to be caring for patients at the Auburn Dental Group.
